This recording certainly lives up to its translated name 'a rare thing', but such was not the case at the premiere. In fact, Soler's Una Cosa Rara was so popular at the time, that Mozart actually quoted one of the ensembles at the end of Don Giovanni. The opera is a comic drama in two acts and takes place in a Spanish town. the character of Don Giovanni (another link to Mozart) is part of the plot. Sadly there are more recordings of this work arranged for winds than as full sung opera. This recoridng from la Fenice is one of the few in existence for an operatic production, and features veterans of the opera buffa stage such as Lorenzo Regazzo and Bruno de Simone. Giancarlo Andretta conducts.
