Juno Nominee 2012 - Traditional Jazz Album of the Year
Toronto-based and Winnipeg-born multiple award-winning bassist and composer Dave Young is without a doubt, one of Canada’s most valuable and beloved musical exports. Whether he’s performing as part of a classical symphony, or as an integral member of an iconic jazz trio (with the likes of the late Oscar Peterson), or leading any of his dynamic ensembles, Dave remains a total musician, with artistic soul in abundance. Equally comfortable in the worlds of orchestral classical music and jazz, Dave is a multiple threat. He is a chameleon-like bassist, who often shines brightest in collaborative efforts with other musicians. Because of his technical skill, few bassists (jazz or otherwise) are able to dig in, swing hard and still render a lyrical arco solo as Dave can.
Dave Young was recently named a member to The Order of Canada; our country’s highest and most prestigious civilian honour. He was installed for his huge international contribution to the music world and to Canada. Dave Young is also the winner (several times over) of the prestigious National Jazz Award & Bassist of the Year.
Dave Young, one of Canada's top bassists, is featured here on only his third release of his 40 year career. The disc is nicely packaged, and the band isn't so bad either!
Joining Dave are Kevin Turcotte on trumpet, and the Botos brothers Robi and Frank on piano and drums respectively. Three of the tunes are of Young's pen, and the rest are a grab-bag of standards and tunes of the unkown kind.
It is always a pleasure to hear Robi Botos perform. Robi is always tasteful with a very mature sound. He takes the first solo on the title track, and what a gem it is! Frank Botos locks in nicely with Dave Young to provide a solid yet swinging framework to work with.
One of Kevin Turcotte's shining moments is on the the second tune. His sound throughout the disc is warm yet full and polished. Check his solo out on this tune, most excellent indeed!
Throughout the disc Dave Young swings with much aplomb with an exquisitely captured sound and the tune choices provide excellent variety (the trumpet/bass duet of Bud Powell's Celia is magnificent!). If you are looking for some of Canada's best jazz musicians playing straight-ahead music, then this is the disc for you!
