Known for his peerless performances of baroque and classical opera repertoire, bass Lorenzo Ragazzo returns here with a new disc of Handel arias. Ragazzo has made a name for himself through such signature roles as Mozart's Figaro and Leporello, but lately has focused on the baroque side of things, especially in the Naive label's Vivaldi opera project. Ragazzo's warmed tone and seemless vocal agility bring these virtually unkown arias to the forefront. Handel's operatic excerpts are dominated by the likes of Rinaldo, Giulio Cesare and such, and even then, usually the soprano and castrato arias, so it is a treat to hear bass arias from such works as Siroe, Alcina, and Tamerlano as well as two canatas. Hot off the heels of a disc of Handel Duets with Sara Mingardo and Sandrine Piau, Rinaldo Alessandrini and his Concerto Italiano again prove that they are a force to be reckoned with in baroque repertoire. This is their niche. Lorenzo Ragazzo is one of the finest basses of our time and if this disc was lieder, Verdi arias or other standards, it would still be worth it. The fact that it is rare Handel is added incentive. A great disc!
