Wholenote Discoveries - December 2009
With the St. Lawrence Quartet having taken up residence in California, the Gryphon Trio can rightfully be called Canada’s pre-eminent chamber group. These two Beethoven trios are personal favourites and receive exhilarating performances here. Although this “Archduke” may not replace as my benchmark the Gilels/Kogan/Rostropovich recording I grew up with, the Gryphons do themselves proud here. David Olds

In late 1792, just one year after Mozart’s death, Beethoven arrived in Vienna. There, he hoped to make good on Count Ferdinand Waldstein’s prophecy: “with the help of assiduous labour you shall receive Mozart’s spirit from Haydn’s hands”. The “Archduke” trio is not only Beethoven’s masterpiece in the genre but also one of his finest lyrical achievements. On this eleventh Gryphon Trio’s recording on the Analekta label, Annalee Patipatanakoon, Roman Borys and Jamie Parker are continuing their survey of the great chamber music repertoire.
