Juno Nominee 2012 - CLASSICAL ALBUM OF THE YEAR: LARGE ENSEMBLE OR SOLOIST(S) WITH LARGE ENSEMBLE ACCOMPANIMENT
Jean-Guihen enjoys an enviable reputation as a musician of exceptional versatility and integrity. His musical horizons are seemingly boundless and he is in great demand both as a soloist with international orchestras and conductors, a chamber musician and as a solo performer. He has performed with many of the world’s great orchestras under the baton of conductors such as Franz Brüggen, Günther Herbig, Ivan Fisher, Philippe Herreweghe and Sir Roger Norrington. He has made several recordings for harmonia mundi. He is frequently asked to host artistic residencies and since the 2010/11 season, he has been Artist in Residence with the Hamburg-based chamber orchestra, Ensemble Resonanz.
Alongside the famous Quattro Stagioni, La Notte, and so on, Vivaldi wrote no fewer than 27 concertos for the cello - an instrument which at the time was generally limited to playing basso continuo. With the genuine virtuose he had available to him at the Ospedale della Pietà, the Prete Rosso played a key role in the emancipation of the cello, which so readily stimulated him to invent varied figuration. The musicians of the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin have chosen to add highly expressive pieces by Caldara to punctuate the sumptuous feast of sound offered by maestro Queyras.
